RunCore has announced a rather unusual SSD/USB SuperSpeed upgrade targeted at laptop owners – The RunCore Express Card SSD featuring 64GB of capacity and two USB 3.0 ports and can function as an external drive.

As an SSD, it features 110MB/s read and 80MB/s write, however no mention of its IOPS capabilities.  The second USB port doubles up as a host port to access the SSD as an external drive when attached to a USB port, such as to a PC which lacks an Express card slot.

While physical installation is as simple as plugging it in, it must be removed each time the laptop is put away due to the external section with the USB ports.  As a result, it’s quite likely this will only be popular with users looking for a fast second disk (e.g. software developer, Video editor, etc.) rather than as a drive to run the OS.

If they made an SSD-only version where the entire SSD fits inside the Express slot, this would potentially be an SATA SSD killer for laptops as it would mean that users could run the OS from the SSD while still using internal 2.5″ SATA bay for a higher capacity hard disk.
